A Vietnamese coffee filter, or phin, is a traditional, portable, and reusable metal brewer that creates a strong, slow-drip coffee, perfect for making authentic Vietnamese iced coffee (cà phê sữa đá). It consists of a chamber, coaster, presser, and lid, typically made of stainless steel. The filter, ideal for single servings, produces a concentrated brew in 4–7 minutes.

Use a regular paper coffee filter to line the phin to eliminate coffee soot at the bottom of your cup. This is one of the best methods to filter hot coffee.
